Our Favourite Hairstyles using Headbands
How do I wear a headband?
This the question I hear over and over when I'm helping lovely customers at my Pop Up Shops.
Some women are curious about trying a headband, but they associate headbands with their school days, and a severe hairstyle where their hair was tightly swept back.
The headband was probably rather uncomfortable too. It's a joy to help them discover how glamorous and comfortable headbands can actually be nowadays!
There is no right or wrong way to wear a headband, and there are many different ways to style them.
I do find there are a few failsafe headband hairstyles that suit most women, and allow for some styling creativity in the mix too.
Am I too old to wear a headband?
Thanks to our childhood associations between school and headbands, some women fear that headbands have a recommended age bracket.
With some of my most glamorous customers wearing headbands well into their eighties and beyond, I have to strongly contest the assumption that headbands are for school girls and very young women.
After all, headbands have a queenly history, emanate feminine power, and just so happen to give you an optical face lift.
What's not to love about all of that?
In my book a headband isn’t just an accessory- it’s a crown, a mood and occasionally a life saver on a bad hair day!
Here are my 5 Favourite Hairstyles using Headbands, brought to you thanks to my experience helping thousands of women at my Pop Up Shops.
1) Hair Down with Padded Headband for classic glamour
The easiest hairstyle to wear with a headband (and my personal favourite) is simply with your hair loose.
I like to keep the look soft (as my ears are not my favourite feature), so to create this look, leave your hair loose around your face, and then simply pop the headband into your hair (imagine you are putting on a tiara!)
The headband purely serves the purpose of elevating your look when worn in this way (rather than securing your hair).
A padded headband is a good choice for this style, as it gives you height, enhancing the classic chic of the hairstyle.
What's more - padded headbands offer the bonus of the optical face lift effect as they draw the eye upwards.
Padded headbands also give body and volume to your hairstyle - a welcome boost if your hair is prone to being flat like mine.
If you're at the opposite end of the spectrum with thick hair, then padded headbands are also ideal, as they stand out in your hairstyle and balance the volume of your hair.
For a classic headband that will work with many of your outfits, try the ivory padded velvet headband which is perfect for everyday!
Pair with a pearl earrings and glossy lips and you'll be feeling perfectly put-together.
2) Half Up Half Down Hairstyle with Headband: Pretty and Practical
A half up half down hairstyle is a classic hairstyle that's always in style.
Paired with a Pearl Headband it’s the perfect duo for chic sparkle, ready for a lunch with the girls, or whatever else your day might bring.
It's practical because your hair is secured back off your face. The headband sweeping any stray hairs back makes this hairstyle extra secure.
This is the ideal hairstyle if the wind is blowing and you want to stay fresh and put-together, or if it's hot and you want to keep your hair out of your face.
A jewelled headband like our pearl headband takes this hairstyle from the practical into the pretty. Not only is your hairstyle securely in place and swept off your face, you're also turning heads in your sparkly headband.
Try the Beige Pearl Flower Headband to create this hairstyle; it's an easy-to-wear choice - given the fact that slim headbands like this suit most women.
3) Hair down: swept back with a Jewelled Headband
This is probably the most popular hairstyle to wear with a headband, and it's popular for a reason!
This hairstyle is practical - securing the hair away from the face, whilst also being delightfully glamorous.
We've left a few strands loose near the face to soften the style slightly, but the majority of the hair is secured back with the headband. This means that the hair is kept in check, whether you're walking on a windy day, or dancing the night away.
If you wear a Jewelled headband to sleek your hair back, you'll automatically be adding a generous sprinkling of sass and sparkle to your look.
To create this hairstyle, simply brushing most of you hair back, leaving some small strands loose near your ears and forehead to gently frame your face.
Next, pop on your statement jewelled headband! Slightly backcomb the section behind the headband to give yourself some volume and add lift to your hair if you so desire.
Volume in your hair plus a jewelled headband is guaranteed to make you feel like you're wearing a crown!
4) Low Bun Hairstyle with Pearl Headband
Low buns ooze classic chic. This timeless hairstyle keeps you feeling put-together and poised.
Add a headband to the low bun hairstyle and you add a touch of luxe. We've opted for classic pearls set with gold here, for extra polish.
To create this elegant hairstyle, sleek your hair into a low ponytail and wrap into a bun. Secure the bun with an elastic, and then to add some volume, tease the hair out from the centre of the bun with your fingertips. To finish the bun, you may want to pin in any loose strands with some hair grips.
If you like to keep your hair neat, add some hairspray for extra hold.
Finally pop on your pearl headband and you're channelling Old-Hollywood glamour.
5) Half Up Half Down Hair with Headband and Hair Bow
Sometimes more is more (with anything in life, and especially with accessories!)
If you'd like to create a statement hairstyle, it's fun and effective to add a Hair bow to your half up half down hair to coordinate with your Padded Headband.
Hair Bows are both classic and playful, and the combination with a headband makes a striking set.
Match the colours of your hair accessories, and opt for an oversize bow, for an eye-catching statement.
If you'd like the look to be slightly more low-key then mix and match the colours and opt for a smaller bow to secure your half up half down hair.
To create this hairstyle, brush your hair into a classic half up half down, keeping your hair smooth at the top.
Then secure your half up hair in place with the bow hair clip at the back.
Finally add your headband over your half up hairstyle to turn the ensemble into a statement look.
We've used our Pink Velvet Padded Headband and Pink Large Satin Bow for the perfect dramatic combination (or for when you just want to feel like a Princess!)
I hope you love my favourite hairstyles using headbands and you're feeling inspired. Headbands really are the best accessory, and a great way to say goodbye to boring hairstyles and hello to fabulous hair days!
