Half Up Half Down Hairstyles for a Wedding Guest
7 Half Up Half Down Hairstyles for a Wedding Guest: The Ultimate Style Guide
When I'm in the thick of wedding season at my John Lewis Pop Up Shops, the question I hear often isn't only about colour or coordination - it's about the best hairstyles for weddings - and how to find the right hair accessories to create them.
Here I am at John Lewis High Wycombe ready to help guide customers with their wedding hairstyles.
We all want to look our best, and mark the joy of the occasion - but we also want to find a hairstyle that's comfortable, and will stay put all day and evening - leaving us to stop worrying about slippage and enjoy the celebration.
What's a wedding-appropriate hairstyle that's actually easy to do at home?
Every time, my answer is the same: half up, half down. There's a reason this style has been a wedding guest favourite for decades. It's beautifully flattering on almost every face shape, it works with hair of all lengths (whether you have fine hair or thick hair), and it strikes that perfect balance in practical terms between "I've made an effort" and "I'm here to dance until midnight."
Half up half down is a style classic, and yet it's a look that's very easy to create at home. The beauty of it is that it looks polished and professional when you add a striking hair accessory.
In this guide, I'll walk you through seven of my favourite half up half down hairstyles for a wedding - each one styled with a different QueenMee accessory, so you can pick the look that suits your dress, your venue, and your mood.
Why Half Up Half Down is the Perfect Wedding Guest Hairstyle
Half up half down hair is the ultimate wedding guest hairstyle for one simple reason: it looks polished without looking fussy. You get the elegance of an updo at the crown, with the soft, flattering frame of hair around your shoulders.
It also photographs beautifully and stays in place - which matters more than you might think when you're sitting through a long ceremony, posing for group shots, and dancing under fairy lights.
1) Half Up Half Down with a Floral Hair Clip
For spring and summer weddings, nothing beats a floral hair clip. There's a romance to florals that suits the wedding setting perfectly - and an intricate flower in a soft pastel like our crystal hair clip large rose adds a touch of artistry to your hairstyle.
To create this hairstyle, take a half up section, secure it loosely, and pin the flower clip to secure the hair. If you have fine hair like the model here, then you can use either some kirby grips or an elastic under the clip, in a half up half down hair hack that means even us fine-haired girls can wear large hair clips (I also have fine hair!)
Don't worry about the placement being too perfect - if it's slightly off-centre it gives a relaxed, I've-just-stepped-out-of-a-meadow vibe that feels beautifully unforced.
If your dress has any embroidery or floral print, pick out a colour from the print and echo it in your flower clip, as we've done in the photo above. It ties your whole outfit together in the most considered way - the kind of detail that will keep the compliments flowing from other wedding guests...
2) Half Up Half Down with a Pearl Hair Clip
Statement florals aren't for everyone, and if you want a look that whispers "wedding guest" in a more understated way, a pearl hair clip is the most timeless choice you can make.
There's something about pearls that feels effortlessly bridal-adjacent - without ever stealing the spotlight from the bride herself.
In the photo below, I'm wearing our gold pearl hair clip with diamante, and it feels like the perfect piece to echo the romance of a wedding.
Style your hair into a soft half up ponytail. If you have fine hair you might want to make the style extra secure with a small elastic underneath the clip. The pearls catch the light beautifully in photographs, and pair gorgeously with everything from a midi dress in dusty pink to a classic LBD.
Pearls work year-round, but they look particularly dreamy at summer garden weddings and elegant evening receptions. If you're the mother of the bride or groom, a slightly larger clip like our pearl hair clip with crystal adds a sense of occasion without ever feeling over the top.
3) Half Up Half Down with a Bow Hair Clip
Bows continue to be high in the style stakes this season, and a half up half down hairstyle is the perfect platform to showcase your bow. A bow hair clip might just be the chicest wedding guest hair accessory of 2026.
There's a Brigitte Bardot quality to a half up hairstyle with a bow - instantly elegant, instantly feminine, and instantly playful.
A black satin hair bow looks impossibly chic with anything tailored. For something softer, try a bow in lilac satin hair bow, or in a velvet fabric like our brown velvet bow hair clip. Position it just at the back of the head for a sweet finish (like our lilac hair bow below), or right at the back of the crown for full Old Hollywood drama, as you'll see in the photo above.
Bow hair clips are wonderfully forgiving for fine hair, as the fabric adds the illusion of volume without weighing the strands down. They're also one of the most comfortable accessories to wear all day - perfect for those marathon wedding celebrations.
4) Half Up Half Down with a Hair Claw
There's a reason hair claws have come storming back into fashion - they're effortlessly chic, surprisingly secure, and they work in seconds. For a wedding, a beautifully embellished hair claw turns this everyday styling tool into a real statement piece.
Sweep the top half of your hair back, give it a gentle twist, and secure with the claw at the back of the crown. The twist sits softly - a relaxed, romantic finish that feels both modern and timeless.
Hair claws are particularly brilliant for thick hair - they can hold a fuller half up that a smaller clip might struggle with. Our hair clamp in pink shown in the photo above, is ideal for medium textured to thick hair. The model in the photo above has very thick hair, and the clip holds a half up half down style well for her.
If your hair is very fine, you could try mini hair claws to create a half up hairstyle like the one we've created in the photo below.
This hairstyle has the same relaxed, romantic finish, but the mini hair claws are super light, and therefore ideal for very fine hair as they won't weigh the hair down. The twist here is an unusual style that feels flattering and pretty, and will work with a wide range of wedding guest outfits.
5) Half Up Half Down with Hair Slides
If you prefer your wedding hair on the polished, minimal side, hair slides are your best friend. Sleek and brilliantly versatile, they elevate a simple half up into something quietly glamorous - think Audrey Hepburn vibes.
The trick is to use two slides - one above the other - sweeping the front sections back and securing them where they meet at the crown. The result is a clean, symmetrical look that feels quietly pretty.
We've used our pearl hair slides small set of 2, for this look, but you can also try diamante hair slides, - they catch the light beautifully against your wedding outfit. This is also a brilliant style if your hair is a touch shorter, as you don't need the length for a ponytail.
6) Half Up Half Down with a Chain Headband
For an unusual take on half up half down hair, try creating the hairstyle with a chain headband.

7) Half Up Half Down with a Headband and Hair Clip
Last but absolutely not least: the half up half down with a headband. This is the look I'd recommend to anyone who wants to create a head-turning half up half down hairstyle. It's fantastically effective, combining two hair accessories together.
For a double dose of romance, try wearing your half up half down hairstyle with a pearl hair clip, paired with a pearl headband.

In this photo, we've combined our beige pearl flower thin headband with our gold pearl hair clip with diamante. The tones of each hair accessory compliment the other, to create an elevated wedding guest look.
For those that really want to wow, you can create a winning combination when you combine a padded headband in velvet with a bow hair clip.
Some might question whether wearing two hair accessories together is overkill, but you'd be amazed at how the two accessories can work together to create an unforgettable style.
At modern weddings, when hats no longer feel fresh, this is a stylish alternative - to keep your outfit feeling elevated without the traditional feel of a fascinator or a hat.
How to Keep Your Half Up Half Down in Place All Day
A wedding day is a long day, and there's nothing worse than your hairstyle drooping by the time the cake is cut. Here are my three secrets for keeping your half up half down looking fresh from ceremony to dancefloor.
A spritz of hairspray before you clip in your accessory gives just enough grip to stop slips. A touch of dry shampoo at the roots adds invisible volume - particularly helpful if you have fine hair. And finally, a tiny backcomb at the crown before securing your half up gives you a little hidden lift that holds beautifully throughout the day.
Whether you're a wedding guest, mother of the bride, or even a bridesmaid looking for something simple yet special, I hope this guide has given you plenty of ideas for your next big day.
The beauty of half up half down is that it suits absolutely everyone - it's just a matter of choosing the hair accessory that suits you.
